'State of Play'

State of play
New and recent work combining a continuing interest in discovering meaning and connections by the adaptation of found material, construct four separate tableaux exploring issues of belief, identity, home and personal history within the four cells.
Avid collectors, the artists have created an archive of fragmented ephemera ranging from old photographs, newspapers & magazines, images and information from the internet, historical and cultural artefacts etc… by referencing the Surrealists use of automatic drawing and free association, they allow the material to dictate the direction their work will take in order to explore our value systems and the contemporary anxiety influenced by current news, events and culture.
The great effort, time and care taken over the adaptation of these fragments which are ‘glued’ together by a mix of technology, graffiti and craftsmanship and sourcing popular, social and historical culture to emphasize the fragile nature of our constructed realities and express the mapping and navigation of our society.
The cells, also treated as found material, provide a dominating functional architecture projecting an attitude of contemplation and reflection by the emphasis of its isolating purpose, lighting is used to focus the viewer and attempt to puncture that space and provide a sense of escape.
The individual installations provide scenarios which question the way we construct our personal identities – from the tensions between physical and virtual realities when immersed in a virtual world, to the construction of a belief system built on the pages of Sunday supplements, the fears buried in the genes of our family histories and the value we put on our property and home.
